Leadership Mentoring

Leadership.  It’s a word used a lot particularly in business because it is essential to organisations but do people really know what it means or really know how to lead people?  Being essential to a business is because leaders generally set the visions and goals and guide teams towards them.  Leadership qualities are required for various positions within an organisation and we know its more than management, it requires to put it in simple terms, being a positive role model, motivate others towards an inspiring vision, encouraging others, respectful, empowering and grateful.

There are a lot of leadership theories, frameworks that outline the behaviour and traits of leaders.  They provide understanding of leadership to be able to apply.  The traits and behaviours outlined in the theories identify what is required to navigate challenges and inspire teams toward shared goals and allow leadership to be measurable and actionable.  Whilst there are different theories, they do have common and overlapped identified behaviours and traits.

There are a lot of leadership training for leaders in organisations available to organisations.  Leadership training is generally based on leadership theories and focus areas that are important to the organisation and its strategy and goals.  Whilst this training and development is generally helpful, informative, increases knowledge about leadership and helpful to improve leadership skills it is  coaching and mentoring that make it transformational for leaders.

So, what is missing is the coaching and mentoring to put the theories and training into practice, so it becomes natural and authentic to them and they even develop their own natural style of leadership  unique to them as an individual.   Coaching and mentoring is where it is highly personalised, specifically situational, provides a safe space and encourages through sharing experiences with benefits to both the mentee and the mentor.  The mentee gets accelerated personal and professional development with increased likelihood of putting any leadership training into practice and therefore improved skills and confidence which is authentically developed not learnt.
